History
The genesis of Spero Centre for Counselling and Well-being traces back to the vision of Dr. Rema Madhava in 2001. With a deep commitment to mental health and emotional well-being, she aspired to establish a counselling centre that could provide professional support to those in need.
The Evolution of Spero: A Journey of Resilience and Renewal
The inception of what is now the Spero Centre for Counselling and Well-being dates back to 2001, when Dr. Rema M. K. envisioned establishing a counselling centre to provide essential psychological support. Despite her earnest efforts to garner support, many of her colleagues and friends dismissed the idea as impractical. However, Mrs. Sudha Ratnam, a firm believer in the cause, introduced the concept to her student, Mr. Denny Abraham, who recognized its significance and potential. With Mr. Denny Abraham’s unwavering support, this vision materialized into reality, culminating in the official establishment of the counselling centre in 2002.
Adapting to Challenges and New Beginnings
Over the years, the centre provided a crucial space for psychological healing and mental well-being. However, the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 posed unprecedented challenges. While the demand for trauma and PTSD counselling surged, the centre was forced to cease its physical operations in March 2020, transitioning to a predominantly virtual model. The devastation caused by the second wave of COVID-19 led to a complete cessation of activities, and efforts to revive the centre were hindered by lingering pandemic aftereffects, logistical constraints, and administrative responsibilities.
By 2022, inspired by the guidance and wisdom of a religious guru, the aspiration to revitalize the counselling centre gained momentum. Recognizing the need for an expanded support system, Mr. Vel Murugan, an experienced nursing professional specializing in geriatric care, was invited to join the initiative. A pivotal meeting was convened at the residence of Dr. Rema Madhava on June 10, 2023, where the formation of a formal trust was deliberated. The founding members—Dr. Rema M. K., Mr. Denny Abraham, and Mr. Vel Murugan—resolved to lay the groundwork for a renewed counselling centre with a structured vision.
The Birth of ‘Spero’
During this period of transformation, the initiative was rechristened as ‘Spero’, a name, meaning “hope” in Latin, was thoughtfully coined by Dr. Mary Raymer, an esteemed English professor. The identity of the organization was further solidified with the creation of its official logo, designed by Ms. Depali, a dedicated computer science student and well-wisher of the initiative. Throughout 2023, a series of deliberative meetings took place to strategize operational areas, define the centre’s
mission and vision, and establish the roles and responsibilities of trustees and volunteers.
The culmination of these collective efforts led to a defining milestone—the official registration of the Spero Centre for Counselling and Well-being as a trust on August 31, 2023. Today, Spero stands as a testament to resilience, collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to mental health and well-being.
